This weekend up north was the annual blueberry festival. A festival to celebrate the abundance of delicious wild blueberries that grow in our region (not much grows up here, so the little northern blueberry certainly deserves its own festival!).
There are blueberry picking contests and blueberry baking contests.
My first year up here I got to be one of the judges for the baking contest, but this year I decided I'd bake my own pie for a change. The only rule was that you had to use at least 50% whole wheat flour (an aim towards making it a bit more diabetes-friendly).
It was a lot of fun. At the end of the day, all the baked goods were auctioned off, and all the proceeds went towards the healthy breakfast project at the local elementary school.
Oh, and guess whose blueberry-coconut tart won first prize in the pie category?
Yup, yours truly :)
Full disclosure: there was a grand total of THREE pies entered in the contest this year, so my odds were pretty good! For some reason everyone made muffins this year.
I'm totally going to make pie again next year! I'm already scheming up ideas...

LOVE baking but I think I'd be totally down for being a judge at ANY baking contest! ; ) Congrats on your winnings
