Weekends: Winter camping "in the bush"

We had quite an adventurous weekend this weekend. After work on Friday, we packed up the car and drove 3 hours into the wilderness (as if we weren't remote enough already!), then transferred all our stuff to a great big sleigh pulled by a skidoo, and drove deeper into the forest to a tiny wood cabin. And that's where we spent our weekend.
No electricity. No running water.
It was minus 30 degrees inside the cabin when we arrived.

But we quickly lit a fire and opened a bottle of wine, and we felt warmer in no time!

The cabin was pretty rustic, but it had everything we needed. A camp stove to cook on, a kettle to make tea in, and plenty of wool blankets to pile on at night.

Going "into the bush" for a few days (as the Cree people call it) is a very popular thing around here. There's something so wholesome about removing yourself from all the overstimulation life constantly bombards you with.

During the days we went snowshoeing across the frozen lakes, and into the silent forests. It felt like the entire world was hibernating and we were the only ones left wandering around.

I made a big batch of this soup, and just as an aside, I think it might be the best soup recipe in the entire world! (Just thought I'd share that!)

Sunday morning was bright & sunny and the air was filled with tiny snow crystals, which created the most magnificent winter rainbow I've ever seen.
ps: this solar phenomenon is called a parhelion (or sundog), in case you're interested : )

It was a beautiful weekend getaway, and I would definitely do it again in the future.
But there's no denying that by Sunday night we were both feeling relieved and very grateful to be falling asleep in our warm bed after an excessively long hot shower!

that looked so relaxing!...i remember when i lived in the Yukon (two years), we used to do a lot of the same...it was always so special to get away into the quiet, natural world. These pics brought it all back...i loved it!

What an adventure! Reading your post has inspired me to do more activities outdoors, as we have so good weather over here (but most people are shut up in their homes only because it's winter).

Amazing. And that winter rainbow, beautiful! When I met Justin our first "trip" together was canoe camping in Algonquin for 3 days and it remains one of my all time favorite trips and experiences. Your weekend sounds so special, those views are spectacular and you've got me curious about that soup now. Best soup recipe in the entire world? I'm going to print out that recipe right now :) xx

very cool. I would love to spend a weekend in a secluded cabin. I'd maybe wait for spring and warmer weather but I think the cold just makes the experience even more rewarding (Typed as I sit comfortably in a heated building)

Make a list of the cookware that you may need at the campsite during camping so that to avoid forgetting anything important, like tongs, spice sets, spatulas, and lighters. Recommended you read
