This was our last full weekend up in Kuujjuaq. One more week of work and then we get to go home.... can you tell I'm homesick?!
I didn't do much this weekends, except study (we're in study mode for the next month for our medical licensing exam). But I did manage to snap a few pictures to show you. First off we saw an incredible "double rainbow" after a sudden, unexpected rainstorm. It was incredible.
Also I bought some adorable handmade Inuit mittens....
and I haven't taken them off since ; )
Seriously they're the warmest things ever. I have never owned anything made with fur before.... I've always felt morally against it... but up here it feels different. Hunting is an essential part of the culture, and every part of the animal is used. Somehow this feels better. Plus I like to support the local woman who spend hours stitching these things by hand.
I hope you had a lovely weekend, and that you have a smooth start to your week.

That rainbow is incredible! Good luck with your studies.
I started a new blog in celebration of World Peace Day. I hope that you will particpate and pass on the peace ;)
Oh your mittens are adorable, I want some!! Good luck with your medical exam, you clever thing!
Great photos of the rainbow. xx
Hey Vanessa!!!
I can sense the homesickness in your writing, it mirrors how I was feeling some of the time in South Korea. One month is only long enough for you to feel homesick sometimes, not long enough to allow you to get really comfortable and then start to make it feel more like home.
I am a firm believer in supporting the local fur trade. I have had a lot of issues with peoples' stands against seal hunting, especially here in Ottawa. Protestors here don't make enough of a distinction between seal hunting and commercial seal hunting. I spent about half an hour lecturing a protestor on her pamphlet and how it was very hard to make that distinction by reading it. The protest against the seal hunt only hurts the Inuit who are, like you mentioned, using every part of the seal and who survive on it. Arguably, the seal lives a very happy, free life until it is killed. It makes me angry as there is way too little mention of how we treat the animals in the factory farms in North America. There is no comparison to the way in which the Inuit survive off seal. Instead, our factory farms are just as bad, wrong and disgusting as commercial seal hunting.
Wow . it is too early for me to go on such rants. I was reading about protesting seal hunting recently and it made me really mad!!!!!
ANYWAYS .... I have loved your pictures from the North .. so spectacular.
Much love!!!
Amanda
Amanda, thanks for your comment. I agree with you completely. The huge factory farms that supply most of North America's meat supply are shockingly inhumane and incomparably worse than a hunting expedition. It's easy to be critical of what others are doing, when actually we should all re-examine our own acts/choices.
