Why can't you just say what you mean???

My good friend was recently broken up with via a (brace yourself)... 7-part text message. The message was essentially an uncourageous, long-winded "it's not you, it's me" excuse. At first she was sad, but now she's just angry... understandably, and frustrated.
This guy had been giving her mixed messages for a few weeks, and when she had asked him outright a week ago, he stumbled & bumbled and lied.

Why do people do this? Why can't we just be straight up with each other?
It reminded me of a Morning Benders song (Loose Change) about this failure to say what you really mean in relationships. If you don't know this song, you should download it. It's really a great song. And if you don't know the Morning Benders, you should check them out too.

Here are the lyrics, in dedication to my dear frustrated friend:

Loose Change by The Morning Benders
Be my mirror; show me what I can change
Don't go, I know that you know
Don't let me down softly
Well, this all happened on a sunny day
You still couldn't see it
When it was just a half an inch away
Staring you right in the face saying,
Why can't you just say what you mean?
Why can't you say what you mean, baby?

Shuffling sideways
There's no way to get home
You're so slippery, frozen, ice cold, alone
Now I see that you're expression has changed
Are you wishing you saved my place?
You're standing on the ocean floor
Wondering what you could have said before
But why can't you just say what you mean?
Why can't you say what you mean, baby?

Well I've been working too many hours
Only for your loose change
The place is messy, complicated
And it only gets you back out
And I want out
Why can't you just say what you mean?
Why can't you say what you mean?
Why can't you say what you mean, baby?
