my favourite scone recipe in the entire world!

One of my best childhood memories is waking up to my mother baking my grandmother's famous oatmeal raison scones. They are so simple, but they are absolute perfection!

Recipe for Devine Scones (after my Grandmother Devine)

  • 1 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup raisins (soaked in warm water  for approx 10 minutes then strained)
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk  (or to make your own buttermilk just add approx 1 Tbs of lemon juice to the milk so that it curdles)
 1. First mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.

2. Then cut in margarine/butter and oats with a pastry blender (alternatively you can use 2 butter knives held in criss-cross to cut in the butter until you achieve consistency of fine crumbs).
3. Mix in the buttermilk and strained raisins using a fork. Knead dough lightly.
4. Pat dough into a flat circle approximately 7 inches in diameter.
5. Using a large knife cut the round into 8 equal sized wedges (like pie slices).

Bake the wedges on an ungreased baking sheet at 325ยบ for 15 minutes (I like to line it with parchment paper)
Once out of the oven, brush the tops of the scones with melted butter (optional).
Serve with Jam and enjoy!

These look really wonderful, I am not sure how long ago this was written although I am seeing 2010 replies on this. I just wanted to ask if this was a really dry scone? How would I store it? And does it have to be eaten hot? Silly questions I know, but I haven't made scones before. Thank you so much for any information.

Hi catedove,
these scones are not dry at all! Although they are best served with a little bit of jam, in my personal opinion, but even that is not necessary. Like all scones, they are best served at room temperature on the same day they are made, but they do keep well in a container on the counter for 2-3 days. Hope that helps. You definitely should try them, everyone I have ever made these for has absolutely adored them :)
